Dr. Dean Colston

Dr. Dean is our Director of Social Media and Health Communications. He helps organizations advance medical communication and educational programs by making social media content, online training, and scientific documents more accessible and user friendly.

One of the benefits of working with Dean is that he is flexible with consumer needs. And he is often described as someone who cares deeply about making a difference.

By training, Dr. Dean is an emotion scientist and a human learning researcher. His therapeutic areas of interest are in psychiatry/mental health, ophthalmology/vision health, immunology/infectious diseases, and psychoneuroimmunology. His research focused on the role of emotions in learning, health, and the workplace.

For the past 25+ years, Dean worked in the medical industry, health insurance, higher education, and blindness advocacy organizations before starting his own business.

Early in his healthcare career, Dean was a mental health counselor, psychiatric disability analyst, provider relations specialist, and continuous quality improvement professional. In his academic career, Dean served as a dean of online faculty, department chair, and university professor for 13 years. For 25+ years, Dean also polished his scientific and technical writing skills by writing and editing numerous documents.

Having a diverse academic background and an appreciation for an interdisciplinary approach, Dean has designed, written, edited, and/or taught a variety of ground, blended, and online courses. All classes developed students’ critical thinking skills and their academic, professional, business, technical, or scientific writing skills. Here are a few of his courses:

Theories of Personality
Abnormal Psychology
Educational Psychology
Principles of Psychology
The Science of Emotional Intelligence
Scientific Writing
Writing and Critical Thinking in the Liberal Arts

Organizational Communication

Human Resources Management in Healthcare Organizations
Organizational Behavior and Leadership

Altogether, Dean believes that an interdisciplinary approach to teaching science deepens the learning experience and makes it more meaningful. This is because learners make connections between ideas and concepts across different subject areas.

Most of all, regardless of one's background or academic major, Dean believes that anyone can learn to think and write like a scientist.
