Dr. Dean Colston

Dr. Dean is our Director of Marketing and Health Communications. He helps organizations create a culture of knowledge sharing and advance medical communication by making social media marketing content, webinars, and technical documents more accessible, engaging, and user friendly.

He champions and elevates social media and content marketing initiatives across our company and for our clients.

He also develops evidence-based, research-informed health content. He translates technical and scientific material into concise, engaging educational content for a lay audience.

Plus, he provide 1:1 coaching services.

 

One of the benefits of working with Dean is that he is flexible with consumer needs. And he is often described as someone who cares deeply about making a difference.

By training, Dr. Dean is an emotion scientist and a human learning researcher. His therapeutic areas of interest are in psychiatry/mental health, ophthalmology/vision health, immunology/infectious diseases, and psychoneuroimmunology. His research focused on the role of emotions in learning, health, and the workplace.

For the past 25+ years, Dean worked in the medical industry, health insurance, higher education, and blindness advocacy organizations before starting his own business.

 

Early in his healthcare career, Dean was a mental health counselor, psychiatric disability analyst, provider relations specialist, and continuous quality improvement professional. In his academic career, Dean served as a dean of online faculty, department chair, and university professor for 13 years. For 25+ years, Dean also polished his scientific and technical writing skills by writing and editing numerous documents.

Having a diverse academic background and an appreciation for an interdisciplinary approach, Dean has designed, written, edited, and/or taught a variety of ground, blended, and online courses. All classes developed students’ critical thinking skills and their academic, professional, business, technical, or scientific writing skills. Here are a few of his courses:

Altogether, Dean believes that an interdisciplinary approach to teaching science deepens the learning experience and makes it more meaningful. This is because learners make connections between ideas and concepts across different subject areas. 

 

Most of all, regardless of one's background or academic major, Dean believes that anyone can learn to think and write like a scientist. 

Affiliations

 

Dean serves on the Board of Directors for the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) Southwest Chapter, the 2021-2022 AMWA Communications Committee, and the DEI Task Force. 

As President-Elect/Program Chair of the AMWA Southwest Chapter, he assists the President and spearheads the educational programming. This includes arranging for publicity of upcoming events.

 

An advocate for individuals with vision loss, Dean participated on the Governor's Council on Blindness and Visual Impairment (GCBVI) and the Central Arizona Council of the Blind. He served on the Public Information Committee and acted as a social media strategist and technical editor for GCBVI. Plus, he assisted with public outreach and marketing materials for both organizations.
